(Compare the opposite: List-centric tools, as opposed to contact-centric, treat your marketing as based on lists of email addresses, rather than marketing to individuals - and your flexibility is greatly diminished as a result of this.)

Connection to your own website with the ability to influence what is shown on it.   • Capture mechanisms: It's not enough to be visible to the mass of potential buyers out there. Then you have to start building a relationship with them. And to do that, you have to be able to capture their information. Thus, compelling capture mechanisms are crucial in order to help you market and sell, and ability to track which contacts were captures in which ways. Thus, landing pages and forms are crucial. Since you'll be creating a lot of these, and you need to be able to create new campaigns quickly and make them compelling, the ease of use and power of these components are important.
  • Ability to communicate: Obviously, you need to communicate with the contacts you capture. Today, email is still king. But other channels are important too. For example, an often overlooked way to communicate with individuals is on the social media channels they're on. And we're not talking about generic mass messages on social media platforms. We're talking about specifically tailored messages to the specific individuals you have in your database.
  • Ability to individualize communication: Generic messages don't work any more. If you have contacts in your database, sending out the same message to everyone of them doesn't cut it today. You need to be able to track (automatically based on rules or intelligence) what situations your contacts are likely to be in, what jobs they want to get done, and what stage of their buying journey they're in. Then, you need to communicate accordingly. You can do this with highly targeted segmentation possibilities, tracking, rules, and dynamic content on both your website, emails and other communication channels.
  • Ability to automate: If you have anywhere above hundreds of contacts (which you most likely do, if you have a business in need of marketing), you will have a hard time manually communicating individually to each contact. Thus, a crucial component of an all-in-one marketing software is an automation engine that understands which contacts are interested in which messages, sending those messages on the right channels at the right time, and telling you which of those contacts are worth following up manually with (lead scoring).
  • Ability to help you sell: What do you do with those contacts with following up with manually? Well, sell to them of course!
